As we get nearer to the end of the year and the expiration of the current tax rates, it becomes even clearer that taxes are going up on everyone the current administration defines as “upper income” earners. Past Presidents like Kennedy and Reagan understood that the best path to increased revenue involved reductions in tax rates to spur economic growth and create new taxpayers. That expansion of the taxpayer base – in concert with serious spending cuts – is the most effective way to close the current budget deficits and whittle down the debt.

Besides, higher taxes on the “wealthy” rarely produce the revenue government seeks. Higher income earners almost always manage to adjust their spending behavior and tax strategies to minimize the effects of higher rates. So, when the politicians tell you that an increase in those rates will result in a surge of new federal tax revenue, you are right to be skeptical.

Yes, new tax rates are coming – either through negotiation or through the sheer force of time – and you’re going to hear a host of politicians praising their own far-sightedness and willingness to “get things done” for the American people. My advice is simple. Ignore the hype and watch the actual revenue and jobs numbers that come out in the weeks and months following the tax hikes. Chances are that the veil will quickly be pulled from the current fantasy tax policy our elected officials are selling.

Past history and common sense always have their way in the end.

So now there are even more stories about how Americans continue to see their personal wealth plummet. These most recent reports indicate that the average American family seems to be almost in a tailspin when it comes to the amount of overall wealth it holds in personal assets. It’s a gloomy picture, and one that has shaken the confidence of many otherwise optimistic citizens.

It’s easy to understand why anyone would be apprehensive when they see this decline. After all, the American Dream has always been about improving your lot in life and then working to ensure that your children are able to attain even loftier heights than you. More and more, it seems as though the basic underpinnings of that Dream are eroding before our very eyes. That does not, however, mean that we as individuals have to just sit and watch our futures degrade. We can do something about it.

That’s why we’re so big on individual empowerment – and how this empowering activity can enable any individual to rise above the circumstances of the times and secure a powerful income stream for himself and his family. To many people, this is a foreign concept that barely registers on a conscious level. Entrepreneurs understand it, though, and they use it to their advantage every day.

It all starts with a belief that wealth is not something to which only a certain “special” class of people can aspire. There is no one on the planet that deserves financial security any more than you or I. Those who have it already have simply done the things necessary to warrant success. They have laid the foundations for their success throughout their lives, and steadily built upon that base. The fact that most people in this world fail to understand this simple concept should provide you with an immeasurable advantage in your own endeavors.

Can you keep your head while everyone else is panicking? You see, there is a crisis in confidence right now, and many millions of Americans are instinctively turning to government to provide them with the answers they seek. Those of us who forsake that path of mediocrity and ignore the dire forecasts can continue to reap the rewards that are still out there, and overcome the wealth decay that has gripped so much of the nation in its deathly embrace.

It really is true that you can learn something new every day. Take today, for example. While listening to some news this morning, I learned that a NASA probe has made a discovery that is sure to surprise most people around the world. This discovery was made by the probe Messenger, which is currently in orbit around Mercury, and involved confirmation of the existence of ice on that planet’s north pole.
Now, if that isn’t evidence of just how extreme the natural universe can be, I’m not sure what is. After all, temperatures on Mercury reach as high as 800 degrees Fahrenheit! Fortunately for this frozen water, it resides in depressed portions of the pole that are shielded from the Sun in a perpetual blanket of shadow. Otherwise, it would boil away in those extreme temperatures.
Scientists have been quick to point out that the existence of water is certainly not evidence of life, which makes perfect sense given the overall high temperature on most of Mercury’s surface area. Still, the search for life has never been our primary motivating factor for exploring space anyway. After all, there is a benefit to knowledge that extends beyond those fundamental existential questions of existence. Sometimes, it is enough that we merely enhance our understanding of creation.
In this case, that enhancement of knowledge should provide scientists with an even better grasp of the way in which the most basic elements of life can survive in even the most inhospitable climates in the galaxy. This should give even greater hope to those of us who still wait for our intrepid explorers at NASA to actually find life outside of our terrestrial abode.

I know a lot of people had been anxiously awaiting news from the space agency regarding that exciting little Martian rover, Discovery. Rumors have been circulating for many days now that caused some observers to believe that evidence of organic life had perhaps been found on the Red Planet. NASA has dismissed such talk, and dashed those believers’ hopes. Perhaps this news from Mercury will at least partially alleviate their disappointment. At the very least, it should provide us all with a renewed sense of awe as we contemplate the wonders of a universe in which icy sheets and unbelievably hot surface temperatures can exist in such close proximity to one another.
I don’t know about you, but I just think that’s something worth pondering.
